Accordingly, artificial leaves are a tool that converts solar energy into chemical energy stored in H2 fuel (equivalent to 273 KJ/mol H2) through photolysis. water.
The H2 fuel source is then stored, transported and put into use in a fuel cell source. H2O is a product generated during the use of this fuel. Therefore, technology brings environmental friendliness, no pollution.
The artificial leaf version, successfully manufactured by the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, has an efficiency of 3% from H2. Each artificial leaf produces a minimum working performance of 10h. Just using materials that are not difficult to find in nature such as Si, Mo, W, Co is to create artificial leaves.
It is interesting that the “catalyst self-adhesion” activity in the creation of the artificial leaf is easily accomplished in sunlight. Therefore, it is possible to create artificial leaves in large quantities.
In order to put the artificial leaf into commercial operation, it is necessary to have an efficiency of sunlight generating H2 above 10% for the artificial leaf to operate over 1,000 working hours.
Researchers are trying to find ways to achieve that and give Sagittarius the ability to repair itself. Also find a way to store H2 in liquid or solid form with suitable “carrier”.
